"In December 2005, the Council authorised the Commission to negotiate partnership agreements with timber-producing countries in order to implement the EU Action Plan on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) and, in particular, to promote trade and imports of verified legal timber into the EU from these partner countries. As in the case of the Central African Republic, the European Commission has initiated negotiations with Liberia. In the same way, we want to ensure the legality of timber imports into the European Union, and this is why the agreement provides for the monitoring of the supply chain, a framework for monitoring legal compliance and a number of requirements in relation to independent auditing."@en1
