The climate change that has been affecting the planet in recent decades through unexpected natural disasters has brought the problem of large-scale deforestation onto the agenda, particularly in the Amazon region, which is considered the ‘lungs of the world’, and the African continent. This text concerns the draft Council decision on the conclusion of a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) between the European Union and the Central African Republic (CAR) on forest law enforcement, governance and trade (FLEGT) in timber and derived products to the European Union, in the context of the FLEGT action plan. This is an EU initiative intended to prevent illegally logged timber from entering the EU. In order for the EU-CAR VPA – concluded 28 November 2011 – to come into force, it must first be adopted by the European Parliament. I am voting for this recommendation, because I consider it crucial that there be legislation promoting sustainability in the forestry sector and preventing indiscriminate logging. Moreover, this VPA will make a sustainable contribution to the CAR’s overall development."@en1
