"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, perhaps there has been an error in communication, but I had asked to speak to explain my vote. In the past decade we have witnessed a series of well-known dramatic events which have led to a consequent increase in the number of controls and restrictions in air travel.
Meanwhile, the European Union, the USA, Canada and Australia have signed a variety of international agreements on the processing and storage of passenger data. Parliament already expressed its willingness to revise such agreements in May 2010, when it decided to reject the outcome of the negotiations between the countries involved.
I am aware of the fact that the competent parliamentary committee has judged this agreement unsuitable, nonetheless I think it is more useful to maintain this new agreement, rather than referring to the current legislation. Since it is not possible to start new negotiations, it would be better to adopt these new measures and improve the previous framework with regard to data protection and the respect for individual rights. The rejection of these new results would deprive Europe of any minimum law in this field, and of any effective tool in combating terrorism and organised crime."@en1
