I think we are basing our conduct on the principle that ‘the polluter pays’, which is a good principle, a sacred principle, and sometimes applies to the Formula One circuits. In Formula One, you race to win. When some people, rather than racing to win, race to push their opponent off the track, accidents happen. At this point, the safety car comes onto the scene to restart the race on a fairer basis. I believe that unless we also approve the rapporteur’s approach, and therefore approve the amendments, we shall approve this new tax indiscriminately, and by doing so we shall have raced to push our opponent off the track. Our opponent in this case is our businesses and our citizens, who have the right not to view these taxes as a way of taking possession of their life, and we shall also be doing a disservice to the principle of ‘the polluter pays’. I believe that we need to have a balanced approach, and therefore we support the rapporteur’s approach and should like the amendments she has proposed to be approved, precisely so all of Europe can be given not only the possibility of having a better environment, but also of having a better environment while continuing to compete with the other great world powers. Otherwise, our proposals to our citizens shall be lacking in credibility and they will punish us by considering all our standpoints to be merely abstract."@en1
