"Mr President, I cannot stress too strongly that in connection with the crisis in Europe, many Member States have recently increased taxation. This is the wrong approach, it is one which slows development even more and further restricts the creation of new jobs. Much better effects would be achieved by improving tax collection rates and being more effective in the fight against tax fraud. There would certainly then be less economic and financial damage, and there would be a chance that the principle of fair competition would be respected. I must admit that the statements which were made here at the beginning of this debate today trouble me. I do not think we are determined enough in the fight against tax fraudsters, and in the current exceptional situation of Europe’s economy and finances, I think we need to be showing much more determination here."@en1
