"This report concerns the EU-Azerbaijan association agreement, in the context of the EU Eastern Partnership. The EU Eastern Partnership is the political framework that strengthens bilateral relations by means of association agreements, taking account of the specific situation, the mutual benefits, and the EU’s strategic interest in the region’s stability and democratic development. Its noteworthy economic growth means that Azerbaijan has been playing an important role in the Eastern Partnership, as well as in solving the EU’s energy security problems. As such, the negotiations under way are to be welcomed. They are intended to strengthen EU-Azerbaijan bilateral relations, translating to increased political association, economic convergence and legal approximation with the EU. However, we cannot fail to call on the Azerbaijani authorities to guarantee greater respect for both the primacy of the law and the political opposition’s freedom of expression, so that we can say that this is a genuinely democratic process that is under way."@en1
