"The mandate for negotiating the agreement with Azerbaijan cannot be viewed in isolation from that for negotiations with Armenia. Both are bound up in the EU’s energy dependence and the acknowledged strategic importance on the Caucasus as a productive and transit region for important energy resources. That is the central reason for updating the existing deep and comprehensive free trade agreement, and for the pressure on the country to join the World Trade Organisation, thereby obliging it to open up its energy market and put a substantial part of its sovereignty over its natural resources – energy, specifically – at the mercy of the multinationals of Europe and other regions in this important sector."@en1
