"The outermost regions are a set of regions of the European Union which, by virtue of their characteristics resulting from insularity, distance, small size and serious dependence on a small number of products, have been conferred a special status enabling differentiated treatment as regards European actions and policies in these regions, pursuant to Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The purpose of this report, which I wrote, is to establish the European Parliament’s proposals for a renewed strategy for the outermost regions, taking into account the important role of cohesion policy in the outermost regions and their contribution to achieving the Europe 2020 strategy objectives. These measures demonstrate these regions’ main needs, which the European Parliament has today recognised as meriting particular treatment."@en1
