"I am extremely pleased to see this report on the concerns of the Irish people regarding the Treaty of Lisbon adopted by a large majority. The Irish Protocol is a document containing the concerns voiced by Ireland on issues regarding the right to life, family and education, taxation, and also security and defence policy.
This protocol, however, is simply a clarification of the Treaty of Lisbon and refers only to the situation of Ireland. It was previously negotiated at the European Council of 19 June 2009 so as to provide the necessary legal guarantees to respond to the Irish people’s concerns following the ‘No’ in the 2008 referendum. Consequently, I believe that Parliament should agree with a European Council decision in favour of examining the proposed amendments to the Treaties."@en1
