"Mr President, as today is the Global Day of Action on Military Spending, we need to learn from the mistakes made by Greece in this sector. Between 1974 and 2011, Greece spent around USD 218 billion on defence and arms programmes. In fact, between 2001 and 2011, despite the reduction in arms and defence spending in 2011 due to fiscal adjustment, Greece was the fifth biggest importer of military equipment in the world after China, India, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, spending USD 10.3 billion. However, over the five years from 2007 to 2011, Greece was the biggest recipient under German and the second biggest recipient under French arms programmes.
We certainly need to learn from our mistakes, because those who benefited from the arms programmes were mainly the arms industry and the senior servants in the Greek administration as well as Greek politicians responsible for selecting the various arms programmes. This culminated, of course, in the arrest of the former Greek defence minister, Mr Tsochatzopoulos."@en1
