"Mr President, a sad reality is being repeated in Guinea-Bissau: once again, instead of defending the nation or the constitutional order and human life, the military are attacking them all to make way for their dirty dealings. A UN report in 2008 warned that the uninhabited islands of Guinea-Bissau were being used by drug traffickers operating with total impunity with the agreement of key military figures, based on corruption and complete lawlessness. What has been done since 2008? What has the EU done? It ordered the withdrawal of the mission that was in Guinea-Bissau to work with the Guinea-Bissau national army, to try to instil a civic mentality in that army. It was a very serious error. We already have a failed state and if, overnight, we are faced with a very serious situation that is difficult to resolve and has consequences for the EU, with drugs and arms trafficking in that country, we and our inconsistent strategy in Guinea-Bissau will also be at stake. I would like to send a message of hope to the people of Guinea-Bissau, who we know want peace, reform and moderation in their country and want to rebuild and go about their lives."@en1
