"Mr President, the alleged problem of secret CIA detention centres and flights in Europe has come to the attention of the European Parliament once again, which is a positive thing, given that it is vital that the truth comes to light. The fight against terrorism cannot and must never be regarded as more important than the protection of human rights. Therefore, any abuses of these rights must be condemned. On the other hand, however, we must be mindful that repeated accusations against states, without any real evidence, also constitute an abuse. Romania, for example, was repeatedly accused of hosting secret CIA detention centres, whilst the only evidence for these allegations was a series of articles in the press. Parliamentary and civil inquiries into the matter have since proved that there have been no such detention centres. Therefore, I want to call attention to the fact that the truth about CIA detention centres will not be discovered through launching frequent and unfounded accusations, but through conducting a reasonable analysis of real and objective facts, which, at least in Romania’s case, disproved the existence of these detention centres."@en1
