"Mr President, according to reports in the media, Syria has an arsenal of 2 500 missiles, some of them containing toxic gas, which have a range that allows them to reach almost anywhere in Europe. Things will become particularly dangerous if a political vacuum develops which makes it possible for radical forces to move in. Therefore, the top priority for the European Union must be to stabilise the situation. Our goal is to bring peace to this region and to establish a moderate, democratic regime which respects the rights of minorities and, in particular, Christians, Armenians and Kurds.
We also need to remind Turkey of its obligations. Ankara must ensure that illegal immigrants do not reach Europe via Turkey. This is a chance for Turkey to show whether it is really prepared to cooperate or whether it is using the conflict to further its geopolitical interests in the region. However, one thing is clear. By granting Turkey the status of an accession candidate, we are bringing the problems of the Middle East right into our own front room and into the heart of Europe."@en1
