"Mr President, demilitarisation of the Syrian conflict is necessary to create conditions for a political solution. The particular problem here is the huge influx of weapons from neighbouring countries. Could Europe perhaps play a preventive and positive role here because thousands of UN blue helmets are stationed both in the Syrian Golan and South Lebanon? Many of them are European nationals.
Madam High Representative, would it be feasible to have some of these European blue helmets temporarily monitor the Syrian-Jordanian and the Syrian-Lebanese border?
Allow me to put a brief second question to you, Baroness Ashton: in addition to its pressure on the Syrian authorities, is the EU exerting pressure on the Syrian National Council to get political talks going? In the final analysis, has the EU welcomed Syria’s acceptance of Kofi Annan’s peace plan?"@en1
