"Madam President, Baroness Ashton spoke forcefully about the situation of a private company whose nationalisation in Argentina has just been announced – and which should not be confused with state interest – and she should do the same when she tackles the defence of human rights with regard to the 15 Kurds who are currently on a hunger strike here in Strasbourg, the situation in the Western Sahara, the situation in Gaza and the occupied territories, and so many other circumstances about which we, as Europeans, should feel truly ashamed.
Above all, however, she should do so with regard to an issue highlighted by Mr Howitt in his excellent report – the participation of civil society and the mechanisms for participation in the negotiation of trade agreements with regard to the right of groups such as indigenous peoples to free, informed prior consultation."@en1
