"Mr President, I must tell you that I see no objective reason to agree to the request made by the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. As you know Mr President, on Sunday, Mr Sarkozy held a meeting at the Place de la Concorde and he urged the crowd on with the words ‘Do not be afraid!’. Like Mr Sarkozy, I am not sure that I will win but I am not afraid either. I must tell you that Parliament’s consultation on this draft directive dates from 29 April 2011. We have discussed it in committee for seven months. My report was adopted on 29 February and it is now the end of April. Extending the deadlines will not achieve anything because the issues at stake are clear. Mr Swoboda says that the situation is unclear, but this is not the case. In the committee, the Liberals and the Socialists clearly voted in favour of increasing the price of diesel. I lost the vote in the committee. An amendment has now been tabled to allow us to vote against applying the principle of proportionality. I just wanted to explain this in German so that my fellow Members understand that their arguments do not hold water. It is clear that we do not need this kind of signal in the current economic situation. However, this is the signal that they want to send and they have done so in committee. Mr President, there comes a time when we stop talking, and we make a decision. That is why I believe that we must make a decision this week."@en1
