"The EU citizenship report 2010 lays out a number of admirable aims. However, as is often the case in the European Union, the report stretches beyond a justifiable level into areas which the EU should leave to Member States. A call for the revision of Ley de Costas (the Spanish coastal law) is one example of a welcome proposal, where people have unfairly found themselves exploited by a change in property law. I support sensible calls such as this. However, harmonising tax and social security systems across Europe is going too far. Member States must have jurisdiction in these areas and I know I am speaking for a majority of the British citizens whom I represent when I say this. I also find it difficult to support an increase in budget funds for Euronews and for publicising the European Year of Citizens. Is this really the most efficient way to spend money in the financial crisis we find ourselves in? Had the report stuck to justifiable proposals I could have been in a position to vote for this report. Because it does not, I have voted against."@en1
