"‘Turkey is making progress but could do better’: that is the message we have just sent to the country by adopting this resolution on the Commission’s 2011 progress report in view of its accession to the EU. The reforms of the judiciary are still too tentative and constitutional reform is stagnating. Little progress has been made to protect civil liberties and ensure the freedom of the media. There are still far too many journalists in pre-trial detention awaiting trial. Reforms also still need to be made to ensure equal rights for women and also children by ensuring greater access to education in particular. We support the Commission’s ‘fresh positive agenda’ aimed at creating new dynamism in EU-Turkey relations. Considering the strategic role of Turkey in the region, the EU is confirming that it wants to strengthen its close cooperation, particularly in terms of foreign policy and neighbourhood policy. The EU remains open to continuing the accession negotiations, but it is up to Turkey to show us its real desire to make progress, and not boycotting the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the EU would be a good sign."@en1
