"I support the report, as it is important to prescribe minimum health and safety requirements relating to the exposure of workers to risks from electromagnetic fields. The medical community has expressed its concerns regarding the entry into force of Directive 2004/40/EC, which prescribes permissible levels of exposure to electromagnetic radiation from medical devices, namely, that these limits are too low both for operators and for industries whose operations are based on the use of radiation-emitting machinery. The only point of dispute concerns the date for transposition of this directive, which was originally due to take effect in 2012, but which the European Commission wishes to ‘delay’ by two years. I believe that, for the sake of protecting workers and securing a healthy environment for them which complies with tolerance levels, in this case as regards radiation, it is important not to accede to the Commission’s request for a two-year deferment period to allow for an evaluation of the problems linked to levels that are considered too low, but to opt instead for one year only."@en1
