"Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, Parliament must strongly condemn the recent violence in Nigeria, particularly the terrorist attacks perpetrated by the Islamist sect, Boko Haram. Extreme poverty, endemic corruption and poor governance have created a breeding ground for extremist groups that enables them to easily recruit young unemployed Nigerians. The Nigerian Government must take effective measures without delay in order to protect its citizens and put an end to widespread corruption and impunity, and the European Union must help the government in its efforts. I also believe that we must avoid putting forward vague and simplistic explanations for the conflict based on religion alone. Instead, we must attack the root causes of the tensions in Nigeria, which are also economic and social. Nigeria is the biggest producer of crude oil in Africa but this wealth is, unfortunately, very poorly managed. Furthermore, the Nigerian authorities, but also the multinational oil companies, must quickly put an end to the current pollution and deal with the damage to the environment caused by oil pollution, which is particularly harmful for the local population."@en1
