"I voted for the report on enlargement to include the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Regional cooperation and good neighbourly relations remain essential parts of the enlargement process. I welcome the progress made in modernising transport, energy and telecommunications networks. In view of the importance of the railway links as an alternative to road transport, I welcome the government’s intention to upgrade or construct railway links from Skopje to the capitals of the neighbouring countries. I encourage continuing efforts to implement the Bologna Process in higher education and cooperation with other countries in this region in order to enhance the quality of its universities. I call on the government to make more efforts to address structural unemployment and protect vulnerable groups, especially by means of sustainable economic growth and through the creation of a favourable business environment. With this in mind, I call on the government to support small and medium-sized enterprises by making it easier for them to access funding. I should say that I am concerned about the modest progress made on workers’ and trade union rights. I call on the authorities to strengthen further the right to work and trade union rights and for more efforts to be made to align national legislation with the EU
