"Diabetes is one of the most widespread non-communicable diseases in Europe. According to estimates, more than 32 million EU citizens, constituting nearly 10% of the European population, are affected by it. The main reasons for this are, on the one hand, the ageing population, which is why we can expect an increase of 16% by 2030, and, on the other, unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as poor nutrition and too little exercise. Since we still do not have a cure for diabetes, people need to reconsider their lifestyles and eat more healthily and participate in more sport. By these means, it would be possible to prevent at least some people from acquiring the disease. I abstained from voting because I believe that each Member State should find national solutions to diabetes according to its means in the health and insurance sector."@en1
