"Diabetes is one of the most widespread and commonest threats to EU citizens in terms of non-communicable diseases. According to estimates, one tenth of the EU population is now affected by the disease. Given the progressive ageing of the population, we have also got to remember that this figure is set to rise, with predictions as high as 16% in 2030. As a result, I think we need to take practical steps to respond to this threat and that one of the priority actions should be the decision to focus on prevention and education. EU citizens need to be even better informed about the possible consequences that their lifestyle, dietary and social choices can have on their lives, as well as the simple rules to follow in order to avoid the onset of diabetes. Meanwhile, aside from prevention, greater information is also required during the management of the disease. Indeed, some studies show that 75% of sufferers are not treating themselves as they should. Investing in research and focusing on prevention and a widespread education campaign are the initiatives that we need to put in place as soon as possible in order to reduce the impact of this disease on the European population."@en1
