I supported its adoption because it will help to improve the sector’s transparency and sustainability. It will provide for a more efficient and inclusive governing structure of the ICCO, the International Cocoa Organisation, on which the EU sits. The European Union is the world’s main importer and consumer of cocoa, and home to its major processors and chocolate manufacturers. It has a considerable responsibility to improve the sustainability of the cocoa sector. This issue has been debated several times in this House, which is why we decided to adopt at the same time a resolution on the sector’s recurring problem: child labour. This text will form a working basis for the members of the ICCO and will act as a point of reference for monitoring the progress made by the parties involved."@en1
