"It is estimated that approximately 215 million children work in activities that involve abuse of their rights, are bad for their health and undermine their dignity. International resolutions and conventions create a clear framework governing the minimum age on the labour market and working conditions. The cocoa sector is, unfortunately, one of the many sectors that employ millions of children, demanding labour intensive work for minimal pay and abusing almost all their rights. Clearly, the western world bears its share of the responsibility for the extensive use of forced child labour on cocoa plantations. This resolution, which I supported, calls on the Member States and, more importantly, the European Commission, which enters into bilateral agreements with cocoa producing countries, especially in Africa, to ensure, among other things, that all trade agreements include effective provisions and legally binding clauses on internationally recognised human rights and social and environmental standards and their application and make provision for measures to be taken if they are infringed."@en1
