"The European Union is the world’s principal consumer of chocolate, 70% of global cocoa production is cultivated in West Africa and approximately 18 million children throughout the world are estimated to work on cocoa plantations. The European Union cannot turn a blind eye to this utterly unacceptable situation which is dreadful in human terms. These children work in extremely dangerous conditions, they are frequently exposed to pesticides, and many are victims of human trafficking. I therefore strongly voted in favour of the annex to this resolution, which follows Parliament’s consent to the renewal of the International Cocoa Agreement in terms of production and commerce. This resolution is aimed at focusing on the issue of child labour in cocoa plantations and, in particular, it strongly condemns the use of child labour (and unacceptable types of work) in the growing and harvesting of cocoa beans."@en1
