"A true area of freedom, security and justice can only exist if citizens are able to enjoy freedom of movement with the best security conditions. This presupposes the existence of effective measures for preventing and combating crime, as well as coordination and cooperation between the competent police and judicial authorities. The growing activity of criminal organisations has been spreading into numerous areas, from drug trafficking and human trafficking to
financial crime, cybercrime, fraud, extortion and environmental crime. Organised crime constitutes one of the main threats to internal security and the public’s freedoms. As such, I believe that combating this scourge should be a high political priority for the EU and its Member States. I therefore support the creation of a special committee on organised crime, corruption and money laundering, which will, I hope, be able to carry out analysis and propose appropriate measures enabling the EU to prevent and combat these threats, thereby sending a clear message at EU and international level, in order to curb all forms of organised crime, which is not confined to Italy."@en1
