lpv:translated text	"I abstained in the vote on this report. I believe that the EU’s decision in 1988 to ban imports of beef that had been treated with growth-promoting hormones was absolutely right. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute settlement system ruled in 1996 that the United States and Canada should have the right to impose trade sanctions against the EU on a number of products as a legitimate response to the EU’s decision. This did indeed happen and it led to a dispute resolution process and a Memorandum of Understanding. I believe that the WTO’s original ruling against the EU was based on a free trade principle that fails to take into consideration either environmental or social consequences. This entire so-called dispute settlement system is therefore absurd and I thus choose to abstain."@en1
