"In 1988, Europe banned the import of beef from animals treated with growth hormones. In 1999, in retaliation, the United States and Canada, with the approval of the WTO, imposed duties on several European products (such as chocolate). Today, the European Parliament has adopted a regulation increasing by 20 000 tonnes (to 48 200 tonnes) the annual Union import tariff quota for high-quality beef from the United States and Canada, from cattle not treated with growth hormones. This agreement makes it possible for the Union to keep its ban on hormone-treated beef, in exchange for increased import quotas for high-quality beef from the United States and Canada and the suspension of sanctions against some European products. This is therefore a crucial step towards ending a dispute that has lasted more than a decade. I welcome this move, which is a victory for European diplomacy but, above all, a victory for European consumers. The United States and Canada failed to impose hormone-treated beef on Europeans, who did not want it."@en1
