"The European Fisheries Fund (EFF) is the subsidy programme for fisheries policy in the EU. The goals of the EFF include promoting sustainable development in the fisheries industry, increasing the competitiveness of the businesses and establishing economically viable companies in the fisheries sector. It also aims to provide better protection for the environment. One important objective is to put an end to overfishing in many European waters and secure the future of the European fisheries industry. Around EUR 3.9 billion in funding is available for the period from 2007 to 2013. Almost EUR 3 billion of this is destined for areas with below-average economic growth. The remaining funding will be distributed across the other EU Member States, together with a small amount which will be administered directly by the European Commission. I did not vote in favour of the report because, as the rapporteur noted, the Commission should, first of all, determine to what extent funding must be made available to support projects and stimulate economic recovery. In addition, there is a concern that the money could be distributed unfairly."@en1
