"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, for many years, the Balkans were a dangerous trouble spot in the history and politics of Europe. Today, we should greatly welcome the fact that successive Balkan countries are declaring, and declaring sincerely, that they have European aspirations. They want to become part of our Union, which, from the moment of its establishment, in a way which was without precedent in the history of our continent, has been an area of economic growth, rising prosperity and, above all, peace. It is no surprise therefore that countries which have seen so much unrest, countries which have been through wars, want to be together with us. Therefore, I support Macedonia’s aspirations to be in the European Union, and I would also like to appeal from here to our Greek friends to stop raising the problem of the name ‘Republic of Macedonia’. I think that in today’s Europe, there should be no room for this kind of narrow, chauvinistic approach. We should all share our continent with each other in a spirit of friendship and understanding."@en1
