"Mr President, granting state support to a particular industry runs fundamentally counter to the free market. The fishing industry must not be dependent on such support. The proposal is a definite improvement on the previous arrangement. It has become easier to redirect resources from the fund to use them for green objectives.
I would have preferred the fund to have been discontinued, but as that is not possible, it is preferable for as many resources as possible to be used to speed up initiatives rather than as direct support for a particular industry. In the long term, I hope that we can eradicate the many support arrangements that, unfortunately, make up the majority of the EU budget. Let us strengthen the free market. That is what is best for taxpayers and for industry."@en1
