"Mr President, Commissioner, you referred to economic growth and its impact on job creation as being one of the aims of this budget, which clearly needs strengthening. However, the austerity policies that are currently impacting on many Member States, many regions, and particularly the human part of European society, the people, really restrict the proposed investments in policies for economic, social and national cohesion. Given that you have already referred to youth unemployment, I am wondering; why not include a youth unemployment indicator in the next Structural Fund and cohesion policy programme, rather than just income criteria? This is particularly relevant at a time when a large section of the European society is unemployed, particularly in some Member States, with few prospects of finding another job, despite the availability of generations of highly qualified young people. This has been apparent today with the reference to greater public investment in universities and higher education."@en1
