"Yes, it is a very sensitive issue. We have no intention of issuing any kind of decree or directive allowing big trucks, called ‘mega-trucks’, or ‘eco-liners’, depending on who is speaking. We have no intention of creating a directive allowing these mega-trucks to travel everywhere in Europe. There are differing opinions in Member States. Some Member States are very much in favour of these bigger trucks. Some Member States are against them. My opinion is that this decision to allow or not to allow these mega trucks should remain in the hands of Member States; this is the position which I will advocate next week in the Committee on Transport. There is only one nuance which has created a certain turbulence: if two Member States authorise the trucks, can they then cross the border between these countries? It would seem ridiculous to me to prohibit this, to say to Member States: ‘yes, you can allow these trucks to circulate on your roads, but you cannot allow them to cross the border between your countries’. This must therefore be left in the hands of Member States. The legal opinion is that we do not have the authority to ban these trucks from crossing borders between countries which allow the use of these trucks."@en1
