"Reliable and accurate statistics are essential to allow effective economic and budgetary policy making by the Member States and the European Union. The debt crisis in the euro area has also highlighted the dangers of statistical inaccuracy and statistical fraud, which are often caused by weaknesses in the quality of upstream public accounting data. I therefore believe that it is crucial for public decision makers to be supplied with relevant, timely and accurate data that are collected and compiled by national agencies in accordance with the principles of impartiality, objectivity and professional independence.
The report on quality management for European statistics calls on the Commission to provide assistance and expertise to the Member States with a view to helping them to ensure compliance and provide high-quality data across all levels of government. It also encourages Eurostat to disclose publicly whether it has doubts concerning the accuracy of all types of statistics. The report emphasises, too, that the independence of the statistical services must be safeguarded at both national and European level from the threat of possible political interventions. I supported the report."@en1
