"I voted for the report on European statistics since I believe that providing accurate and really relevant statistics is vital to sustainable and balanced regional development, as well as to the development of European policies capable of responding effectively to economic, social and territorial realities at every level: local, regional, national and European. We must take the necessary measures to ensure that users of statistics have access to good-quality information supplied in good time at both Member State and European Union level.
At a time when the economic crisis in the euro area has glaringly highlighted the dangers of statistical inaccuracy and statistical fraud, I think that it is of paramount importance for statistical bodies to have protection mechanisms and systems to ensure that they cannot be subject to political influence. This will allow us to guarantee their independence, which is a particularly important factor in maintaining the credibility of statistical data. Last but not least, I would like to welcome the binding nature of the rules on producing and verifying the accuracy of European statistics because this means that Member States will have to ensure that their statistics are accurate across every level of government."@en1
