"I voted against this report because I think introducing quotas in relation to the representation of women in politics is absolute unnecessary. It is true that until a few decades ago, women were at a distinct disadvantage, but luckily, equal rights and opportunities for men and women have been in place in this part of Europe for at least 50 years.
There are rather a lot of examples of women in politics who reached the upper echelons of power through merit. This only came about because of their capabilities, and certainly not as a result of any special allowances. I think a quota system is also counterproductive for women, since merit would not be the focus, merely the numbers game. I am in favour of equality, in all senses: everyone should be able to take part in a competition, men and women alike, with the same rights and without any form of discrimination."@en1
