"I welcome this proposal, as it represents an important step in order to ensure the proper functioning of the internal market, which is still limited by a number of EU Member States’ rules governing cross-border successions. The aim of this regulation must be to make life easier for people, including heirs, to reduce costs and to ensure rules are clear and applicable throughout the Union. Therefore, it is extremely important that the European Parliament and the Council are working towards finding a fair agreement that can be inclusive of all the different sensibilities and legal traditions in the Union. Regarding this point, I would like also to express the hope that Member States with doubts will continue to be part of a dialogue based on the general principle of testamentary freedom and the willingness to reduce administrative burdens for families in Europe, which will lead to greater legal certainty for people when writing their wills."@en1
