"The achievement of the objectives underlying the creation of the European Union – specifically, the single market and the free movement of people and goods – has fostered the mobility of Europeans, who are increasingly emigrating to other Member States, where they establish residence, work, marry, divorce, acquire property and die. This report, drafted by Mr Lechner, concerns the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement of decisions and authentic instruments in matters of succession and the creation of a European Certificate of Succession. This is a cross-border system that constitutes an important step forward in this regard and that will enable the more effective application of the law, in line with the concerns of families. Indeed, once a decision has been made, there are no limits to the application of a judgment due to the European Certificate of Succession. I welcome the adoption of this report, which constitutes good news for thousands of European citizens: they will benefit from this initiative, which will put a stop to many conflicts. However, I regret that it has not been possible to reach an agreement with the United Kingdom or Ireland."@en1
