"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the tragedy of Fukushima has shown that after Chernobyl there is still no absolute safety when it comes to nuclear power plants. It is quite true that the cases are very different: with regard to Chernobyl it was an accident inside the power plant; in the case of Fukushima, the causes were external, an earthquake and a tsunami of unprecedented intensity among the greatest that have ever occurred, as far as we know from the history of the planet. This, however, can only raise questions about the safety of nuclear power. I am not one of those who claim – given the incidents – that we absolutely must reject nuclear power, although in many countries, this seems to be the way they are going, but in any case a thorough discussion must necessarily take place, while taking into account, as has often been repeated, that it is a matter for Member States but that Parliament should also have a say. Allow me to conclude by expressing my condolences and sympathy to all those who have been affected by this disaster."@en1
