"Mr President, I believe we all view with concern the developments in North Africa. The Arab Spring, in which we invested so much hope, is being suffocated by half-hearted reforms and even bombs. In Egypt, a collective Mubarak has replaced the individual Mubarak, and few can predict what will happen next. The date of the presidential elections – in August at the earliest – is so far off that they can be postponed many times, and it is unclear whether democratic elections will bring to power people who divide society or unify it. At the same time, people are dying. We see again that building peace is much more difficult that funding non-governmental organisations or sending in bomber aircraft. Real peace must be based on justice. Justice which respects indigenous local traditions. Justice which, along with elections, freedom of expression and freedom of association, also brings a dignified social life. All who genuinely respect human rights should now demand that there be no postponement of presidential elections and that power be handed over to a civilian government commanding support in parliament."@en1
