"The joint motion for a resolution by the European Parliament on the situation in Syria is the result of the escalating and continuing violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations in the country, which has been going on for nearly a year now. UNICEF estimates that about 400 children have fallen victim to the suppression and the UN estimates that the death toll in Syria has exceeded 5 400 in the course of the 11 month-long uprising, and that thousands of other citizens have been wounded and at least 69 000 have been detained. This paints a picture of a humanitarian crisis in this country. Clearly, the international community has already delayed massively in taking effective action against the Syrian Government, as various approaches and conflicting aims have restricted it. In this resolution, which I supported, the European Parliament has taken a clear position."@en1
