"I voted against the EU-Morocco agreement concerning reciprocal liberalisation measures on agricultural products and fishery products, but not because I do not support the development of EU-Morocco trade relations, which I consider key to encouraging reform in the political and economic governance of Morocco, and thus to helping to realise the democratic aspirations of the Moroccan people. I voted against because I believe that the terms of this agreement do not comply with international law, as they ignore the need to establish a specific scheme for trade in agricultural and fishery products produced in Western Sahara, a territory which has been occupied by the Kingdom of Morocco since 1975.
As Parliament has rejected two amendments which proposed the establishment of a new system that meets the specific rights and interests of the Sahrawi people under this agreement, I had no alternative but to refuse to be complicit in an agreement that, in its current form, violates international law and the most basic rights of the people of Western Sahara to make use of their own resources."@en1
