"Parliament’s resolution, of which I voted in favour, on the situation in Russia following the Duma elections on 4 December 2011, and on the upcoming presidential election on 4 March 2012, is a warning from the EU regarding respect for democratic rules in one of the most important countries in the world. The outcome of the December elections was bitterly contested, and the protests against alleged electoral fraud led to statements from Russian President Medvedev regarding comprehensive reform of the political system. I believe that it is important to stress that the peaceful demonstrations which occurred are nothing other than an expression of the people’s desire for free and fair elections, which Russia is required to guarantee as a member of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe."@en1
