"The new Hungarian constitution, which entered into force on 1 January 2012, has been arousing concern in a number of areas, particularly the independence of the judiciary, the independence of the central bank, the independence of the data protection authority, and fair conditions of political competition and political alternation; there is also concern about the so-called ‘Stability Law’, which subjects the income tax system to a two-thirds majority, and the cardinal laws that give the current majority the right to appoint officials for an unusually long term. I voted in favour of Parliament drafting a report to determine whether Hungary is in compliance with EU legislation and values. This will determine whether there is a clear risk of a serious breach of common European values. I also consider it important to ask the Commission to monitor closely changes to Hungarian laws, their implementation and their compliance with the spirit of the European Treaties."@en1
