"Mr President, I would like to welcome the vote. I very much welcome the beginning of a debate on the budget – it is about time we started addressing it sensibly. I particularly welcome the carrying of Amendment 2 for the ending of this ridiculous travelling circus that results in our monthly flog here to Strasbourg: something which I would very much like to do without. The single most frequent question I am asked by my constituents is: Why is the EP not taking seriously the issue of austerity in the way that Member States are having to? The joke is, of course, that some of the Members here think they are. They need to go and have a look at what is happening in places like Greece and see exactly what needs to be done. We need to take a very big slash to our budgets. This place is not an alternative source of funding for pet projects in Member States that are not funded by Member State governments."@en1
