"Mr President, the situation in Syria is deteriorating with every passing day; there are real massacres taking place in the cities where the popular uprising against the Damascus regime has become radical. Women, children and innocent people are dying, with over 7 000 victims recorded in the last year… This situation, as stated here, can no longer continue and I hope that today, the UN General Assembly shall condemn the bloody retaliations in Syria, despite the fact that Russia and China have exercised their veto in the Security Council. The position of the Arab League and, as of yesterday, that of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, bode well for putting political pressure on the Assad regime to accept a peaceful solution to this conflict. The Syrian regime must make way to a democratic solution for the crisis and the European Union must find firm solutions, including implementing additional sanctions in order to stop the intolerable retaliations against the Syrian population."@en1
