"This proposal for an amendment to the regulation is an attempt to compensate for current difficulties in the milk sector. Longer-term contracts are not the norm and the regulation aims to make them compulsory at a European level. One aspect which is highlighted is the fact that industry associations must play a more important role in future, as they will help to ensure transparency and better organisation, in the opinion of the rapporteur. Transparency means that everyone involved in the production chain must provide the relevant information for analysing the market. This will result in much more work for small farmers.
In summary, there is a clear tendency to strengthen the already powerful position of large companies at the expense of smaller businesses. Current practices which have worked well are to be changed to ensure that the last independent dairy farmers join conglomerates. For this reason, I have voted against the amendment of the regulation."@en1
