"I voted for the legislative resolution on the proposal for a regulation on entrusting the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) with certain tasks related to the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR), including the assembling of public and private sector representatives as a European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy. IPR enforcement provides both appropriate benefits for creators and innovators and protection for consumers against the risk of buying counterfeit products.
A Eurobarometer survey conducted in 2009 highlighted that one in five EU citizens has unwittingly bought a counterfeit product at least once. Particular attention must be focused on tackling the counterfeiting of medicines, foods and cosmetic products or domestic appliances, which can result in serious harm to consumers. I think that it is important for all consumers to be constantly informed about the effects and dangers of counterfeiting and piracy and that sustainable, coordinated action needs to be taken to combat IPR infringements, in full compliance with fundamental human rights and freedoms. Furthermore, the information obligations imposed on Member States and the private sector by this regulation must not create an unnecessary administrative burden, and it should be possible for the data already supplied to EU institutions to be reused."@en1
