"In September 2010, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, set the target of universal energy access by 2030. Indeed, energy access is crucial to the pursuit of many of the Millennium Development Goals. Of the various obstacles to universal access to these services, funding difficulties are the main cause of the supply gap. There is therefore justification for these goals to be taken into account in the process of allocating funds available for European development aid: firstly, because this will bring the objectives of the EU authorities’ actions in line with those of the UN and, secondly, because access to energy can, in general terms, have a multiplier effect on aid awarded by improving basic production conditions. I therefore voted in favour."@en1
